"Remediated Complacency", COFA, 2015
Remediated Complacency, consists of a 1980’s Rank Arena malfunctioning television set , a camera (which seems to be reaching the end of it’s functional lifespan) is pointed at the TV set, it is connected to a projector via a data processor, which in turn is pointed at the television also. The looped image of the static on the television set is projected on the wall behind it, yet a shadow of the television set is also cast. As people enter the space a kinect sensor sends signals to a processor which activates LED lights on wires suspended near the television. The television itself is covered in hundreds of miniature figurines which when lit by the projection and LED lights create eery shadows of static yet mobile human figures. These moving shadows of the miniature figurines are evocative of a post modern self referential take on the phantasmagoria of the 1800's. The shadow cast by the television obscures the CRT in the projected image behind it, alluding to the obfuscation of the moving image by our attachment or lack there of to the concept of television or the screen itself. Remediated Complacency is a work in progress, being developed as part of my research which deals with notions of planned obsolescence and the positioning of ready made objects in contemporary art, focusing primarily on the CRT or cathode ray tube, the core component of legacy television sets."Remediated Complacency", 2015
